LOGISTICS INFO

Logistics info

If this is your first import from China, even the vocabulary can be unfamiliar. Here are the basics worth knowing before you request a quote.

HOW TO CALCULATE

Start with how rates are set

Freight is not priced on weight alone. Bulky cargo costs more even when it is light.

CBM calculation (sea)

Length (m) x width (m) x height (m) = CBM per carton. Multiply by the number of cartons for total volume.

e.g. ten cartons of 60cm x 40cm x 50cm 0.6 x 0.4 x 0.5 = 0.12 CBM, so 10 cartons = 1.2 CBM

Volumetric weight (air)

Length (cm) x width (cm) x height (cm) / 6000 = volumetric weight (kg). The greater of this and actual weight becomes the rate basis.

e.g. a 60 x 40 x 50 carton weighing 8kg 120,000 / 6000 = 20kg, so 20kg applies
The divisor (6000, 5000 and so on) differs between airlines and express carriers. The basis actually applied is confirmed at quotation.

CHECKLIST

Pre-import checklist

Having these ready makes quoting and execution far quicker.

  • What the item is (including material and use)
  • Quantity and carton dimensions (L x W x H)
  • Total volume or total weight
  • Origin in China (city, seller or factory name)
  • Target arrival date
  • Whether the item is certification-controlled
  • Delivery address in Korea
  • Whether you hold a business registration (required for clearance)

If the maths is awkward, just send photos and quantities

We will work out volume and the applicable rate basis for you.
